We are working in conjunction with the community of Long Branch to cultivate city-owned garden sites on Seventh Avenue and Sairs Avenue, as well as other locations. These gardens will be enriched with trees, vegetables, and other plants. We will be hosting various activities at these sites throughout the season.
Workshops will be held at the garden on Seventh Avenue during our community gardening hours. Some of these workshops include:
Composting
Learn the simple requirements needed to create this high quality fertilizer while reducing the load of your kitchen trash bag. We will explore various methods and build our own three sectioned bin for use on the Community Garden.
Planting a Butterfly Garden
Come out and learn about the plants that will attract these delicate beauties to your yard. We will cover the numerous plant varieties that are sources of food for both adults and larvae, and will be planting our own garden using low-maintenance native perennials and annuals.
Attracting Birds to Your Yard
Tired of spending money on bird seed? Plant a bird garden and find your feathered friends dining on the seed of flowers that you grow in your own yard. Learn how to build a safe and healthy habitat that will encourage birds to your yard.
Boxes for Bats, Bugs, and Birds
Gimme shelter! Encourage these beneficial animals to your home with the addition of these simple structures. Learn the specific dimensions that are preferred by each species and create one that best fits your home ecological niche.
